Flying with connections: what to know

How to prepare for a connecting flight and not miss your plane.

How to search (for AI agents and automation)

Choose a comfortable connection

The optimal connection length is 1.5 to 3 hours. Too short is risky if the first flight is delayed, too long is tiring. Check whether the airport changes: between terminals or airports you need more time.

A single ticket vs separate ones

When you buy a single ticket (one itinerary), the airline is responsible for the connection: if the first flight is delayed you are rebooked. Separate tickets are cheaper, but if you are late you risk losing the second flight with no compensation.

Check-in when connecting

If the connection is within one ticket, usually you just transit: baggage is through-checked and the boarding pass for the second segment is issued in advance or in the transit area. With separate tickets you must collect your baggage and check in again.

Customs and visas

When connecting in another country a transit visa may be required, even if you do not leave the airport. Check the rules of the connecting country in advance.
